Kingsbury had two years left on his contract, with a $4.2- million buyout.

North Carolina Hires Mack Brown: North Carolina has hired Mack Brown to be its new head football coach. He replaces Larry Fedora, who was fired following a second straight nine-loss season. Fedora took over the team in 2012 and went 45-43 in his seven years. Fedora's current contract was set to run through 2022. He has a buyout of just over $12 million. Brown, who has served as an ESPN college football analyst for the past five years, is returning to North Carolina. He was the Tar Heels' head coach from 1988 to 1997. His teams went 69-46-1. He led the Tar Heels to winning seasons in each of his last eight years, including top-10 finishes in the polls during his final two seasons, 1996 and 1997. Brown has a 238-117-1 record in 30 seasons as a head coach, including 16 years (1998-2013) as head coach of the Texas Longhorns. His teams at Texas went 158-48. He and the Longhorns won the 2005 national championship. Brown also has been the head coach at Appalachian State and Tulane.
Illinois Extends Lovie: Illinois has extended the contract of head football coach Lovie Smith by two years, through 2023. The former NFL head coach has a 9-27 record through three seasons with the Fighting Illini. The team finished last in the Big Ten's West Division for the second straight season.
A&M Outlasts LSU: On Saturday, November 24, in College Station, then 22nd-ranked Texas A&M upset then No 7 LSU, 74-72 in a seven-overtime game that tied the NCAA record for most overtimes in an FBS game. A&M finished the regular season 8-4, 5-3 SEC. The 74 points LSU allowed are the most given up by a ranked team, eclipsing the 73 No. 24 Fresno State gave up to Northern Illinois on October 6, 1990, and the first seven-overtime game involving a ranked team. The 146 combined points are the most in an FBS game in NCAA history and the second most in college football history, behind the 161 points Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M scored in Abilene Christian's 93-68 win in 2008.
