Week 8 TCU Sports, Athletics News Summary

Men's Basketball: Former Frogs star basketball player, Kenrich Williams is in the NBA. He has made the opening day final roster with the New Orleans Pelicans. Williams is now just one of about 450 basketball players in the world who can say they play in the NBA. You don’t have to be good at math to figure out this is the elite. Williams is set to make $838,464 this year. The 6’7″, 210-pound small forward played for the Frogs from 2014-2018. He was hoping to be the first TCU player drafted in the NBA, in about two decades, but ended up undrafted. Williams kept hustling, kept fighting, and beat out a lot of drafted players to earn an NBA roster spot. He played in 102 career games at TCU, averaging 11 points, 2.7 assists with 8.6 rebounds per game.

Women's Basketball:
The TCU women's basketball team has been selected fourth in the preseason Big-12 poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches. The preseason ranking is the highest for the Horned Frogs since they joined the conference six years ago. Baylor, Texas and West Virginia were picked first, second and third, respectively. TCU returns eight players, including all five starters, from last year's squad which posted 23 wins, its most since 2007-08. The Frogs advanced to the WNIT Semifinals. TCU opens its season at noon on Tuesday, November 6, against Duquesne, at the Ed & Rae Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth. Purchase season tickets: here. Schedule: here.

Women's Basketball: Senior Amy Okonkwo has been selected by conference coaches to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Senior Jordan Moore and junior Adeola Akomolafe earned honorable mention honors. The 2017-18 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year and an All-Big 12 Second Team honoree, Okonkwo led the Horned Frogs with 14.4 points per game last season. Her 519 points were the sixth-most in a single season in TCU history and she reached double figures in scoring in 27 contests, including eight games of 20 or more points. A native of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Okonkwo is the second TCU player to ever be named to the preseason All-Big 12 Team, joining Zahna Medley who earned the honors in back-to-back seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Men's Golf: The TCU men's golf team recently played in the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas. No. 5 seed TCU started the tournament with a loss to No. 4 seed Kansas. On the second day of the tournament, TCU tied top-ranked Oklahoma State, which is also ranked No. 1 in the nation, and defeated No. 8 seed Texas Tech. On the third and final day of the tournament, TCU beat No. 9 seed West Virginia, 4-1-1, and beat Kansas State, 3-2-1. TCU finished in fifth place. No. 6 seeded Baylor defeated No. 4 Kansas to win the championship, 5-1-0. The Big 12 is the first conference to host its own match play tournament, utilizing the format that determines the NCAA men's golf national champion. Teams were ranked and seeded 1-10 based on the squads' combined Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings entering the tournament.

Cross Country: The TCU men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up regular season competition at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station on Saturday, October 13. Facing several Big 12, SEC and South Central teams, the women's team finished 13th and the men's team finished 25th. The Horned Frogs will compete at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 26, in Ames, Iowa. Following the conference meet, TCU opens postseason competition with a return to College Station for the NCAA South Central Regional meet, scheduled for Friday, November 9.

Women's Soccer:
The Horned Frogs recently beat Kansas State, 2-1, in Manhattan. TCU (10-4-2, 3-3-1) has its final home match of the regular season Friday night (October 19) at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The Frogs will host Texas Tech, beginning at 7 pm. Prior to the game, TCU will pay tribute to its nine seniors.

Women's Golf:
The TCU women's golf team won the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational this week in San Antonio. Freshman team member Sabrina Iqbal, playing in her second collegiate tournament, was a co-medalist. TCU won the tourney by seven shots over Marshall. It is the Horned Frogs' first tournament title since the 2016 Greenville Regional Preview in Greenville, North Carolina. It's the 19th tournament title in the 25-year tenure of head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin. During the tournament, Annika Clark and Iqbal carded 68s as TCU set a school record for lowest round with a nine-under-par 279. The Horned Frogs' previous-best round was a 281 twice before in San Antonio, at the 2010 Alamo Invitational and the 2016 Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.

Men's Basketball: Senior guard Alex Robinson is one of 20 players named to the watch list for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. In addition, Robinson has been named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Conference team as an honorable mention. Robinson averaged 8.9 points last season and a team-best 6.1 assists per game, the fourth-best in the Big 12 Conference. Robinson finished with 190 assists, the sixth most in a season at TCU. Devon Dotson of Kansas is the only other Big 12 player on the list. Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor recognizes the top point guards in Division I men's college basketball. By mid-February, the list of players will be narrowed to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles on April 12. Robinson has earned preseason conference honors for the first time. The Fort Worth native was on the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team as a sophomore during the 2016-17 season after transferring from Texas A&M.
