TCU-Texas Tech Rivalry:

  • TCU and Texas Tech play for the Saddle Trophy, a longtime tradition that was renewed in 2017. The teams used to compete annually in the West Texas Championship for the Saddle Trophy before it went away in the early 1970s. Thanks to M.L. Leddy's Boots and Saddlery of Fort Worth, the Saddle Trophy returned. The Saddle Trophy sits on a stand and includes the logos for TCU and Texas Tech. Scores of the 60-plus years of rivalry are represented on the stand.
  • TCU has won two straight games in Lubbock, in 2015 and in 2017; the only two times in program history that TCU has won consecutive games in Lubbock. The Frogs never have won three straight games in Lubbock.
  • Since the Horned Frogs began Big 12 play in 2012, the road team has won five of the seven meetings between te teams.
  • Texas Tech holds a 32-26-3 edge over TCU in the all-time series that began in 1926 with a 28-16 TCU victory.
  • TCU is 7-18-3 versus the Red Raiders in Lubbock and 19-14 in Fort Worth.

TCU-Texas Tech Connections:

    • TCU head coach Gary Patterson and Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells were in Logan, Utah, at the same time. Patterson was the secondary coach at Utah State from 1992-94. Wells was Utah State's quarterback from 1993-96.
    • Since TCU began Big 12 play in 2012, Patterson will have coached against three head coaches at Texas Tech (Tommy Tuberville, 2012; Kliff Kingsbury, 2013-18; Matt Wells, 2019).
    • Three members of TCU's staff have spent time at Texas Tech.
    • TCU co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sonny Cumbie came to the Horned Frogs after four seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Tech (2010-13).
    • Cumbie was the Red Raiders' starting quarterback as a senior in 2004. One of his top receiving targets was current Tech wide receivers coach Joel Filani.
    • TCU defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chad Glasgow was Texas Tech's defensive coordinator in 2011.
    • TCU offensive line coach Chris Thomsen served in the same capacity at Texas Tech in 2012. He was the interim head coach in the Red Raiders' 34-31 win over Minnesota in the 2012 Meineke Car Care Bowl.
    • Texas Tech associate head coach/special teams/offensive line coach Mark Tommerdahl was TCU's tight ends and special teams coach from 1998-00, Patterson’s three seasons as the Horned Frogs' defensive coordinator.
    • Cumbie has been on both sides of scoring history in the TCU-Texas Tech series. He helped lead the Horned Frogs to single-game TCU and Big 12 scoring records with an 82-27 victory over the Red Raiders in 2014. The most points ever allowed by TCU under Patterson was in 2004, when Cumbie was the starting quarterback for Texas Tech in its 70-35 win.

Frogs Missing in Action: TCU quarterbacks Max Duggan and Mike Collins suffered injuries in the Oklahoma State game (November 2). Duggan played against Baylor (November 9) and is expected to start against Texas Tech. Collins did not play against Baylor. His status for the Texas Techgame is unknown. TCU graduate transfer quarterback Alex Delton has left the team. Redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Rogers has announced he is transferring from TCU. Cornerback Julius Lewis and linebacker LaKendrick Van Zandt returned to action in the Oklahoma State game. In the Bayor game, Van Zandt suffered what may be a season-ending injury. The Texas game was the last game for offensive tackle Lucas Niang. He has had season-ending surgery for a torn hip labrum. Receiver Dylan Thomas suffered a leg injury in the Iowa State game. The injury required surgery. Thomas most likely will miss the remainder of the season. Cornerback Noah Daniels suffered a season-ending injury during a summer practice session.

The Line: TCU opened as a one-point favorite. TCU now is a three-point favorite. The over/under is 55.5 points.
