Week 5 TCU Sports News Summary




Women's Golf: The TCU women's golf team finished eighth, out of 18 teams, in the Golfweek Conference Challenge, which was played in Vail, Colorado. It was the team's season-opening event. TCU was led by Annika Clark. UCLA won the tournament, 56 strokes ahead of TCU. Finishing behind UCLA, and ahead of TCU, were Peppedine, Denver, Campbell, SMU, Virginia Tech and Georgia.

Baseball: Former TCU baseball player Andrew Mitchell has been recognized by the LEAD1 Association as one of its Top 25 Congressional Staff Student-Athletes. Mitchell works as a legislative assistant with Texas Sen. John Cornyn. Congressional offices were surveyed for nominations and top selections were made by current and former leaders in Congress who were college student-athletes. Mitchell was a three-year letter-winner at TCU from 2011-13. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox. LEAD1 represents the athletics directors of the 131-member universities of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Additional information: here 

TCU Women's Basketball: The Horned Frogs will open their 18-game conference slate at home in Fort Worth at 6:30 pm on January 2 against West Virginia. Other home conference games are: January 12, Baylor, at 3 pm; January 16, Texas Tech, 6:30 pm; January 22, Oklahoma, 8 pm; January 27, Kansas, 12 pm; February 3, Oklahoma State, 2 pm;  February 13, Iowa State, 6:30 pm; February 23, Kansas State, 5 pm; March 5, Texas, 6:30 pm. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship will be held at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, beginning on Friday March 8. Schedule: here

Men's Tennis: TCU men's senior tennis player Alex Rybakov won the singles title at the recently held Battle in the Bay Classic, in San Francisco. Rybakov, a two-time All-American for the Horned Frogs and the No. 10 ranked player in the country, went 5-0 in singles action. He defeated three ranked opponents, including No. 4 Brandon Holt of USC. Rifle: The second-ranked TCU women's rifle team recently opened the season at home with a victory over UTEP. The Horned Frogs aggregate score of 4,708 is the top score in the NCAA this season. TCU fired a 2,327 in smallbore and a 2,381 in air rifle. The air rifle mark is tied for the fourth-highest score in program history. Rachel Garner led the field with a 587 in smallbore. Elizabeth Marsh and Kirsten Hemphill fired a 582 and 580, respectively. Casey Lutz contributed a 578 to account for the final team score. Schedule: here 

Soccer: For the first time this season, the TCU women's soccer team dropped a home contest, 2-0, to West Virginia on Sunday, September 23. TCU's record dropped to 7-2-2. TCU was shutout for the second time this season. The Frogs allowed double-digit shots for the third time this season. Schedule: here 

Baseball: TCU baseball opened fall practice on September 14, with conclusion scheduled for October 28. The Horned Frogs finished the 2018 season with a 33-23 record. TCU advanced to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament, where the Frogs lost, 7-6, to Baylor in extra innings. TCU returns 18 letter-winners and welcomes the 20th-ranked recruiting class.
