ESPN College GameDay on Saturday, September 15: ESPN's College GameDay will be in Fort Worth, in the Commons area of the TCU campus,  on Saturday, September 15, for the TCU-Ohio State game. The show airs from 8 to 11 am Central on Saturdays. The Frogs and the Buckeyes will kickoff at 7 pm in AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The game will be aired on ABC. This will mark TCU’s seventh appearance on GameDay and the third time hosting. The Frogs hosted the live show before the West Virginia game last season, and in 2009 when Utah came to town. The Frogs are 6-0 when being part of GameDay festivities. The appearance will mark the 41st for College GameDay ahead of an Ohio State game, putting the Buckeyes second on the all-time list of appearances per school. Alabama leads all schools with 42 GameDay appearances prior to their games. The Buckeyes are 27-13 when being part of GameDay festivities. Kirk Herbstreit is one of the analysts for GameDay. Rece Davis, Desmond Howard and Lee Corso sit alongside Herbstreit on the GameDay set. Herbstreit was a four-year letter winner as a quarterback at Ohio State from 1989 to 1993. Herbstreit graduated from Ohio State in 1993 with a degree in Business Administration. Herbstreit met his wife, Allison, at Ohio State, where she was a cheerleader. Herbstreit's father, Jim Herbstreit, had been a co-captain of the 1960 Ohio State team and was an assistant coach at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. When Kirk was named co-captain in 1992, the two became only the second father-and-son duo to have each been Ohio State captains (James and Jeff Davidson were the first in 1989; Pepper and Dionte Johnson became the third in 2007).

The Line: Opened with Ohio State as an 8.5-point favorite. At press time, the line had moved to Ohio State as a 12-point favorite. The over/under is 59.

Midnite's TCU-Ohio State Prediction: TCU 21, Ohio State 19 (does this score ring a bell?)

  • Ohio State beat TCU 14-0 in 1937.
  • TCU's lone win came in 1957, when the Frogs handed Ohio State an 18-14 season-opening loss in Columbus. The Buckeyes finished the season 9-1 and winning the Big 10 championship and the Rose Bowl, 10-7, over Oregon. Ohio State finished first in the Coaches Poll and second in the AP Poll. It was Ohio State's third national title team. Woody Hayes was in his seventh season as head coach of the Buckeyes.
  • TCU tied the Buckeyes, 7-7, in 1961 (watch: here). Ohio State finished the season 8-0-1, won the Big 10 championship, and finished second in the AP and Coaches Polls. The Buckeyes were awarded the national championship by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). This was the Buckeyes fourth national championship and the third for head coach Woody Hayes.
  • Ohio State beat the Frogs 14-7 in 1966.
  • The Frogs were slammed by Ohio State, 62-0, in 1969.
  • The Buckeyes beat TCU 37-3 in 1973 (watch: here).
  • TCU and Ohio State are conference rivals in rifle. The Horned Frogs and Buckeyes compete in the Patriot Rifle Conference. Other member schools are Air Force, Alaska, Nevada and UTEP.
  • TCU is 14-21-2 all-time against Big Ten schools.
  • TCU is 5-1 versus Big Ten opponents under Patterson (lost to Michigan State; beat Minnesota twice; beat Wisconsin; beat Northwestern twice). When TCU and Patterson lost to Nebraska in Lincoln in 2001, the Cornhuskers were not in the Big Ten. They were in the Big Eight.
  • The Horned Frogs' most recent game against a Big Ten team was a 23-17 victory at Minnesota in the 2015 season opener.
  • The last time TCU played a Big Ten school, the Frogs lost to Michigan State, 17-16, in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl on December 29, 2012, in Tempe, Arizona.
  • Among the Horned Frogs' Big Ten victories under Patterson was a 21-19 decision over Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl to cap a 13-0 season.
  • TCU has a home-and-home series with Purdue beginning next season in West Lafayette, Indiana.

  • The last time Ohio State played a Big 12 school, the Buckeyes lost, 31-16, to Oklahoma in Columbus.
  • The last time Ohio State played in AT&T Stadium, the Buckeyes beat USC, 25-7, in the Cotton Bowl, on December 29, 2017.
  • The last time TCU played a Big Ten school, the Frogs beat Minnesota in Minneapolis, 23-17, in their season-opener.
  • The Frogs' biggest win against a Big Ten team came in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2011, when TCU beat Wisconsin 21-19.
  • The last time TCU played in AT&T Stadium, the Frogs lost to Oklahoma, 41-17, in the 2017 Big 12 Championship game on December 2, 2017
  • TCU and Ohio State are two of five programs nationally to finish in the top 10 of the final polls at least three times in the last four seasons. The others are Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma.
  • TCU and Ohio State are two of 21 schools that have won multiple national championships and produced a Heisman Trophy winner. The other schools are Alabama, Army, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.
  • E. Godon Gee, as president of Ohio State University, said in 2011 that non-automatic-qualifying teams but potential BCS busters such as TCU and Boise State play Little Sisters of the Poor every week. When the Frogs played in the Rose Bowl, undefeated TCU (12-0) responded by beating Wisconsin  21-19 in the game that was played on January 1, 2011. The game not only marked their first trip to Pasadena but the first by a team from the Mountain West Conference to play in a New Year's Day bowl game. The Frogs were led by senior quarterback Andy Dalton, who is the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. When Gee referred to TCU as a "Little Sister of the Poor," he perhaps didn't know that the real Little Sisters of the Poor is a Roman Catholic religious institute for women. It was founded in Spain in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan. Jugan established the order to care for the elderly. After the Frogs' Rose Bowl win, in Columbus some electronic billboards went up that read “Congratulations to TCU for their BCS Rose Bowl Victory,” from “Little Sisters of the Poor.” Some TCU supporters put forth the money to make a point to supporters of Ohio State and Gee. Gee said his wisecrack turned out to be a good thing because it helped promote the good work of the sisters. Gee eventually moved on to become president of West Virginia University. In 2014, when TCU played West Virginia in Morgantown, Gee apologized for making the remark about TCU.
  • The 2014 college football season marked the first playoff system in college football's bowl subdivision. The BCS rankings determined bowl game matchups from 1998-2013, replacing the conference affiliations that previously set premier matchups. Coming into conference championship weekend TCU was ranked in the third playoff spot. TCU won its final regular-season game, 55-3, over Iowa State, to finish 11-1 (the Frogs lost to Baylor in Waco, 61-58, on October 11). The Frogs and Baylor tied for the Big 12 Conference Championship. Ohio State, ranked sixth in the rankings, beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big 10 Championship game, to finish 12-1. Ohio State replaced TCU in the final playoff ranking. The Buckeyes beat Alabama 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl, then beat Oregon 42-20 in the College Football Playoff national championship game in AT&T Stadium. Ohio State finished number one in the AP and Coaches Polls. TCU went to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and demolished Ole Miss, 42-3, to finish 12-1. The Frogs were ranked third in the AP and Coaches Polls.
  • On the Ohio State roster are seven players from Texas, including two from Fort Worth: offensive lineman Demetrius Knox (#78) of All Saints Episcopal, and linebacker Baron Browning (#5) of Kennedale.
  • On the TCU roster is one player from Ohio, punter Andrew David (#34). He transferred after the 2015 season to TCU from Michigan.
  • During his college coaching career, Francis Albert Schmidt, who passed away on September 19, 1944, served as the head football coach of TCU from 1929-1933 and at Ohio State from 1934-1940. he compiled a career record of 156-58-11. He was 45-6-5 at TCU. He was 39-16-1 at Ohio State. Schmidt also served as the head basketball coach at TCU from 1929–1934. Schmidt's most memorable years, however, were coaching football at TCU and Ohio State. In five years at TCU, he won two Southwest Conference championships. In seven seasons at Ohio State, Schmidt won two Big 10 Conference titles. Schmidt's most notable contribution to popular culture came in his first year at Ohio State. When asked about his team's chances of beating rival Michigan, Schmidt replied, "Those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else." This phrase had previously been a Texas regionalism, but because of the press attention given to Schmidt, it soon became an internationally known cliche. Ohio State beat Michigan the first four years Schmidt coached there. Since that time, any Ohio State player that defeats Michigan is awarded a "Gold Pants Charm", a gold lapel pin shaped like football pants.
  • Tom Herman head football coach at the University of Texas, was Ohio State's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach from 2012-2014. Herman is in his second year at Texas. Patterson is 1-0 against Herman. The Frogs defeated the Herman-coached Longhorns, 24-7, in Fort Worth last season.
