TCU-SMU Game Photos

Photos by Tom C. "Midnite" Burke

Ominous clouds and steady rain greeted TCU-SMU football fans last Friday night (September 7) in Dallas.

Ready to see the Frogs drown the Mustangs are TCU alums Bob Dixon (top photo) and Tom "Midnite" Burke (left, bottom photo) and TCU fans Richard and Belynda Simbala.

Tailgating on the Boulevard was adversely affected by the rain, wind and lightening.

Lightening accompanied the rain, causing the TCU-SMU game's scheduled 7 pm kickoff to be delayed to 8:59 pm.

Fans wait for the weather to subside (photos above and below).

Hmmmm...as last Friday night's weather, and final score of TCU 42, SMU 12, proved, it isn't always "Sonny on The Hilltop," despite what the scoreboard proclaimed.

As the Mustangs learned, Friday night's wet weather was not conducive for frying frogs!

Members of the TCU band wait out the weather delay.

Empty stands were a result of the inclement weather.

Concession stands at Gerald J. Ford Stadium offered something that's not yet available at concession stands at Amon G. Cater Stadium.

Good news! Apparently the concession stands at Gerald J. Ford Stadium do serve 100 percent beef, and not horse meat!

Even the TV cameramen had a tough time keeping themselves and their camera equipment dry in the rainy conditions.

Here come the Frogs!  TCU players wore a white jersey with white pants and a purple helmet.

Here come the Mustangs, in their red, white and blue!

After taking the field for warmups, the teams stayed on the field for the national anthem, which is a rarity for college football games. All of the players stood throughout the anthem, and TCU players removed their helmets.

The TCU Showgirls (above) and TCU cheerleaders didn't seem to mind the rainy weather.

TCU's captains for the game were (left to right) Ben Banogu (#15), Kellton Hollins (#55), Jaelan Austin (#2) and Ty Summers (#42).

SMU running back Braeden West (#6, photo above) takes off on his 51-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.  That run marked the third play of more than 40 yards the Frogs’ defense has given up this season. After that stunner, the Mustangs, despite their creative signalling of offensive plays (photo below), would only score again twice, on a safety and a field goal. The Mustangs had 131 rushing yards.

The TCU defense, including linebacker/defensive end Ty Summers (#42, photo above), and safety Innis Gaines and defensive tackle Corey Bethley (#6 and #94, respectively, photo below), constantly pressured SMU quarterback Ben Hicks (#8). Hicks completed only 18 of 38 passes for 111 yards. He was sacked four times. Bethley leads the Big 12 with three sacks.

TCU defensive end Ben Banogu (#15, photo above) forced SMU quarterback Ben Hicks (#8) to fumble on this play. TCU linebacker Alec Dunham (#23, photo below) picked up the loose ball and returned it for a TCU touchdown.

As always, during the game, the Horned Frog defense was a focus of TCU head coach Gary Patterson.

TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson (#3) completed 16 of 29 passes for 154 yards. He threw one touchdown pass, a 42-yarder to KaVontae Turpin, and had one pass intercepted. True freshman wide receiver Taye Barber (#4) had two receptions for 16 yards.

Robinson also ran the ball eight times for 67 yards and one touchdown (photo below), an 18-yarder on this play in the fourth quarter.

Against SMU, KaVontae Turpin (#25) had a 78-yad punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter and he caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Shawn Robinson in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with four receptions for 64 yards and three punt returns for 112 yards, giving him 176 all-purpose yards. His accomplishments earned him the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honor. This is a TCU record fourth time in his career that Turpin has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, breaking the previous mark of three held by former place-kicker Jaden Oberkrom.

(photo below) It's only second down, but Turpin seems to be telling the official he can't wait for fourth down and an opportunity to delight fans with another dazzling punt return.

TCU backup quarterback Michal Collins (#10) carried the ball twice for 22 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run on this play in the fourth quarter.

(photo below) On the sideline after his touchdown run, Collins checks out an artificial turf burn he suffered on his right elbow.

TCU running backs Sewo Olonilua (#33, photo above) and Darius Anderson (#6, photo below) rushed for 59 and 69 yards, respectively. Overall, the Frogs had 239 rushing yards. The Frogs now are 89-5 when totaling at least 200 yards on the ground under TCU head coach Gary Patterson.
