Week 16 TCU Sports Athletics News Summary



TCU Football: TCU defensive end Ben Banogu has been named to the Associated Press All-Big 12 team. TCU defensive end L.J. Collier, cornerback Jeff Gladney and safety Ridwan Issahaku were named to the second team unit. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was the unanimous pick for The Associated Press Big 12 offensive player of the year, the fourth consecutive season a player from the conference champion Sooners has won the honor. Oklahoma placed a league-high six players on the AP first-team All-Big 12 team. West Virginia linebacker David Long Jr. was selected as the league's top defensive player. Kansas freshman running back/kick returner Pooka Williams Jr. was named the league's newcomer of the year. The ballots were submitted before Williams' arrest on suspicion of domestic battery. Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley was named Big 12 coach of the year in a split vote. He received nine of the 20 votes for coach of the year. Iowa State's Matt Campbell got seven and Baylor's Matt Rhule got four. Men's Basketball:
The TCU men's basketball team defeated SMU 67-59 in Dallas on Wednesday, December 5. The win improved the Frogs to 6-1 and dropped the Mustangs to 6-3. Junior guard Jaylen Fisher and senior forward JD Miller each scored a season-high 15 points. Senior guard Alex Robinson moved into third place on the Frogs' all-time assists list. TCU improved to 87-106 all-time against SMU and 33-66 against SMU in Dallas. It was the Frogs' first win in Dallas since 2009 and their first winning streak in the series since 2010. The Frogs beat SMU in Fort Worth last year. The Frogs then played USC on Friday, December 7, in the Staples Center, in Los Angeles. TCU blasted the Trojans, 96-61, to improve their record to 7-1. Fisher and Alex Robinson led with 15 points. Redshirt freshman center Kevin Samuel had a double-double, his third of the year, with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Miller had 14 points, five assists and three rebounds. TCU's next game is against Indiana State, on Sunday, December 16, at 4 pm CST, in Schollmaier Arena on the TCU Campus in Fort Worth, Texas. After that game, the Horned Frogs head to Honolulu, for four games -- three in the Diamond Head Classic (December 22, 23 and 25) and a single game against Hawaii Pacific on December 28.


Women's Basketball: The TCU women's basketball team beat Montana State 71-49 on Saturday, December 8, in Fort Worth. Jordan Moore tied the school record for field-goal percentage with an 8-for-8 shooting performance, finishing with 17 points. Ryann Payne had a career-high 12 points. Lauren Heard had 10 points. With the win against another inferior, lower-tier team, the Horned Frogs improved to 7-1 for the second consecutive season and the fourth time in program history. The Frogs' lone loss of the season came against BYU (61-58), a team of comparable strength and stature as TCU. The Frogs' next game is at 12 pm CST on Saturday, December 16, against Southern University, in Schollmaier Arena, on the TCU Campus in Fort Worth, Texas.
