TCU's Previous Game: On Saturday, October 31, in Waco, Texas, TCU tricked Baylor and beat the Bears 33-23.

Previously: TCU had lost its season-opener, 37-34, to Iowa State, in Fort Worth; beat Texas, 33-31, in Austin, Texas; lost, 21-14, to Kansas State, in Fort Worth; and lost to Oklahoma, 33-14, in Fort Worth.

Texas Tech's Previous Game: On Saturday, October 31, in Lubbock, Texas, the Red Raiders were drubbed by Oklahoma, 62-28.

The Sooners rolled up 559 total yards; 213 yards rushing, 346 yards passing.

Texas Tech had 400 total yards; 134 yards rushing, 266 yards passing.

Previous TCU-Texas Tech Game:

Last year in Lubbock, TCU was losing, 31-30, in the fourth quarter. TCU’s final, and deciding, three points came on a 20-yard field goal by Jonathan Song with 5:38 left in the game. The field goal was Song’s fourth of the game. He also kicked field goals of 36, 28 and 25 yards.

Texas Tech had the ball with 2:23 left in the game, needing only a field goal to steal a win and send the tortillas, water bottles and curse words flying from Red Raiders fans.

On Tech’s first play of a potential game-winning drive, TCU senior safety Vernon Scott, who had a team-best five tackles in the game, forced Red Raiders wide receiver McLane Mannix to fumble after a nine-yard reception. Frogs sophomore safety Trevon Moehrig made the fumble recovery. The TCU offense ran out the clock to secure the victory.

The victory was the Frogs’ third consecutive win in Lubbock and it climaxed a big day by TCU true freshman quarterback Max Duggan and the offense, who opened the game with four straight scoring drives to build a 24-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Duggan completed a then career-best 25-of-42 passes for a career-high 323 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions. He carried the football 18 times for 75 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run.

TCU’s offense accumulated 549 yards; 323 yards passing, 226 yards rushing. The Frogs ran 95 plays; 42 passing plays, 53 running plays.

The Frogs possessed the football for 43:26 of the game’s 60 minutes. It was the highest time of possession by TCU since 2008 and the most by any Big 12 team since 2011.

By comparison, Texas Tech ran only 51 plays; 33 passing plays for 333 yards, and 18 running plays for 69 yards. The Red Raiders held the football for only 16:34.

TCU-Texas Tech Rivalry:

  • TCU and Texas Tech play for the Saddle Trophy, a longtime tradition that was renewed in 2017. The teams used to compete annually in the West Texas Championship for the Saddle Trophy before it went away in the early 1970s. Thanks to M.L. Leddy's Boots and Saddlery of Fort Worth, the Saddle Trophy returned. The Saddle Trophy sits on a stand and includes the logos for TCU and Texas Tech. Scores of the 60-plus years of rivalry are represented on the stand.
  • TCU has won three straight games in Lubbock, in 2015, 2017 and 2019; the only  time in program history that TCU has won three consecutive games in Lubbock.
  • Since the Horned Frogs began Big 12 play in 2012, the road team of the TCU-Texas Tech series has won six of the eight meetings.
  • Texas Tech holds a 32-27-3 edge over TCU in the all-time series that began in 1926 with a 28-16 TCU victory.
  • TCU is 19-14 versus the Red Raiders in Fort Worth and 8-18-3 in Lubbock.
  • TCU has won five of the last six meetings between the two teams: 2014, won 82-27; 2015, won 55-52; 2016, won 63-24; 2017, won 27-3; 2018, lost 17-14; 2019, won 33-31.

He helped lead the Horned Frogs to single-game TCU and Big 12 scoring records with an 82-27 victory over the Red Raiders in 2014. The most points ever allowed by TCU under Patterson was in 2004, when Cumbie was the starting quarterback for Texas Tech in its 70-35 win.
