Shriners International has canceled the 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl due to challenges presented by COVID-19.
"This decision was extremely difficult to make," said Shriners Imperial Potentate James R. "Jim" Smith. "After consulting with
our key partner, the National Football League, along with countless leaders within the
intercollegiate athletics community and the professional and college
scouting community, we came to the conclusion that the risks were too
great for the upcoming game. Once the NFL cancelled the Pro Bowl earlier
this month, it became even more clear that we would need to take a
one-year pause. The safety and well-being of our athletes and attendees is
our overriding concern."
Players eligible for the 2021 game still will receive formal
invitations and become a part of the historical 96-year tradition.
"We all look forward to when this pandemic is over and we can get back
to doing all the things we love, including this well-loved Shriners
tradition, the East-West Shrine Bowl," said Smith.
