TCU Leads: Going into the 208 football season, TCU leads Texas FBS schools for the umber of 10-plus win seasons since 2000. TCU has 12 such seasons (2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006,2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2017). Texas has nine such seasons, Baylor 4, Houston four, Rice two, A&M one and Texas Tech 1.
Ohio State Suspends Football Coach Urban Meyer: Ohio State has suspended head football coach Urban Meyer for the team's first three games after a two-week investigation into allegations that Meyer and others mishandled domestic assault accusations made against former assistant football coach Zach Smith. OSU athletic director Gene Smith has been suspended without pay from August 31 until September 16. Meyer will not coach the Buckeyes in games against Oregon State (September 1), Rutgers (September 8) and TCU (September 15). Meyer wil be allowed to return to the sideline to coach the Ohio State in its fourth game of the season, against Tulane, on September 22.
Maryland Suspends Football Coach DJ Durkin: The University of Maryland placed head football coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave in early August while it investigates accusations about mistreatment of players that surfaced after Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair collapsed during a May workout and died weeks later.
Texas, Oklahoma, TCU in Top 25 Richest College Football Programs: Texas, Oklahoma and TCU were in the Top 25 of the wealthiest programs in college football, based on 2016-17 fiscal year financial figures obtained from the U.S. Department of Education. Texas leads the country, Oklahoma is sixth, and TCU is 24th.
For that fiscal year, Texas had football revenue of $141.2 million, expenses of $43.3 million, and a profit of $97.9 million.
Oklahoma had football revenue of $95.9 million, expenses of $37.9 million, and a profit of $58 million.
TCU had football revenue of $58.8 million, expenses of $35.7 million, and a profit of $23.1 million.
New Texas Athletic Director 'Steals' People: New Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, who left the comfy confines of TCU and Fort Worth for the weirdness of the University of Texas and Austin, has stolen for his Longhorns' staff Drew Martin from TCU and Shawn Eichorst from Nebraska. Martin will oversee external matters like marketing and managing the relationship with Longhorn Network. Martin was an associate athletic director for marketing and licensing with the Horned Frogs and had been at the school since April 2012. Eichorst, a former Nebraska athletic director, will handle internal matters, which includes dealing directly with coaches as a sport administrator. Both men will hold the title of executive senior associate athletic director.
Briles To Coach Again: Former Baylor football coach Art Briles has been hired to coach an American football team, Guelfi Firenze, in Florence, Italy. He will join the team in October. Briles was fired by Baylor in 2016 amid a sexual assault scandal at the Baptist school and hasn't coached since. Baylor fired Briles after a school investigation reportedly found his football program operated as if it was "above the rules" and that staff interfered with assault investigations and witnesses. Briles has denied wrongdoing or attempts to cover up assaults.
Texas To Upgrade Football Stadium: The University of Texas System Board of Regents has approved a $175-million enhancement of the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial football stadium in Austin.
The price tag will be funded without tuition or taxpayer dollars, but largely by donors and ticket sales, according to school officials. Roughly $30 million of a hoped-for $125 million in donations has been pledged so far. The system's governing board has authorized the school to borrow an additional $50 million in revenue bonds that will be paid off with proceeds from tickets and premium seating.
Included will be new suites, clubs, loge boxes, sponsor amenities, modified fan seating and new coaches' offices" to the south end zone of UT-Austin's football stadium. An expansion of the north end zone of the stadium was completed in 2008. The latest project is expected to be largely completed by July 2021, with construction starting around the summer of 2019.
