Preseason Big 12 Football News



Big 12 2018 Media Preseason Football Poll: Oklahoma was chosen to finish at the top of the standings for the third consecutive year in the Big 12 football preseason poll, voted on by media representatives. This year marks the sixth since 2011 in which the Sooners led the preseason rankings. They have captured a Big 12-record 11 league titles, including the last three.

OU garnered 46 of the 52 first-place votes. West Virginia was chosen second with TCU, Texas and Oklahoma State rounding out the top five. The Mountaineers received two first-place nods while TCU and UT had one each. Kansas State was predicted to finish sixth, claiming two first-place votes followed by Iowa State, Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas.

Big Money: The Big 12 reported revenue of nearly $365 million for the 2017-18 academic year. It is the 12th consecutive year league revenue has increased. Each of the conference's 10 schools earns about $36.5 million for the year, with some small variances between the top-earning school and the lowest-earning school of about $2.5 million. The average take for each school is about $2 million more than a year ago. It is anticipated that each school's payout for 2018-19 could be about $40 million.

The Big 12 is withholding 25 percent of Baylor's share of conference revenue pending the results of an independent review into structural changes as a result of the sexual assault scandal at the school.

The Big 12’s revenue has nearly doubled since welcoming in TCU and West Virginia in 2012, from $159.5 million to $313 million during the 2016 fiscal year. In year one of their membership in the power conference, the Frogs took home $11 million. For comparison’s sake, the Frogs took home less than $1 million in their final year as a Mountain West Conference member.

Here is how the Big 12's payout compares with other conferences:

1) SEC: $40.4 million per school, a figure which includes a payout for the each school's third-tier TV rights; 2) Big 10: $34.8 million per school, a figure which includes includes a payout for each school's third-tier TV rights; 3) Big 12: $34.5 million, a figure which does not include a payout for each school's third-tier TV rights; 4) PAC 12: $24.7 million, a figure which includes includes a payout for each school's third-tier TV rights; 5) ACC: $23.8 million, a figure which includes includes a payout for each school's third-tier TV rights.

Kansas Names New Athletic Director:
Jeff Long has been named director of athletics at the University of Kansas. He replaces Sheahon Zenger, who was fired by the university. Long has more than two decades of experience in athletic administration at the Division I level, most recently at the University of Arkansas, where he led athletics from 2008 through 2017. Long was fired by Arkansas last November after facing criticism for the football team’s on-field struggles. Prior to leading Arkansas, Long served as athletics director at the University of Pittsburgh. He also has held administrative roles at the University of Oklahoma, University of Michigan, Virginia Tech University, Eastern Kentucky University and Rice University. He held coaching staff positions at Duke University, the University of Michigan and North Carolina State University. Additionally, Long served as the chairman of the inaugural College Football Playoff selection committee for 2014 and 2015 and remained a member of the committee through 2017.

Kansas State Extends Bill Snyder's Contract: Kansas State has signed a contract extension with 78-year-old head football coach Bill Snyder. The contract is for five years, through 2022. Since taking over the program for his second stint in 2009, the Wildcats have 73 wins. They've finished ranked in the top 20 three times since 2009. In his first stint in Manhattan (1989-2005), Snyder revived a program that was winless in each of the previous two seasons. His best run of success came from 1997-2003, when KSU won 11 games in six of seven years. Snyder will make $3.45 million in 2018, and his salary will increase by $300,000 each of the following two seasons. The new deal includes a salary renegotiation clause after the 2020 season. He is one of only six coaches to win 200 or more games at the same school. Should he finish out the contract without retiring or moving into a different role with Kansas State, Snyder would be 83 during the 2022 season. Joe Paterno was fired from Penn State at age 84, and Bobby Bowden retired from Florida State at age 80.
