Major Rule Change for College Football's 2023 Season

 

The NCAA has made a major rule change for college football, beginning with the 2023 season.

For the first season since 1967, the game clock will continue to run, as it does in the NFL, when a team makes a first down on a play that ends inbounds, rather than stopping until the chains are set and the referee signals ready for play. The exception is during the last two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

The primary rationale for the change was to cut the number of plays to reduce players’ potential injury exposures, not necessarily to shorten the nearly 3 1/2 hours it takes to play the average game.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee projects that the new rule will trim seven or eight plays from the average of about 180 per game in 2022. An eight-play reduction over a 12-game season would save 96 potential injury exposures per team, and there would be over 100 fewer exposures for teams that advance to the playoff.

The new rule will be used on every NCAA level except Division III, which was granted a request to delay its implementation until 2024.

 

 

 

2023-24 College Football National Championship Game Selection Information

 

The College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee is set for the 2023-2024 season.

The CFP selection committee selects the top four teams in the playoff and assigns them to semifinal games. The committee meets in-person beginning late in the football season and produces a ranking of the top 25 teams each week leading up to its final selections. 

 

Committee members will convene in person on Mondays and Tuesdays. Their rankings will be revealed on ESPN from 6 to 7 pm (Central) on Tuesday, October 31; Tuesday, November 7; Tuesday, November 14; Tuesday, November 21; and Tuesday, November 28. The final rankings will be revealed on ESPN from 11 am to 3 pm (Central) on ESPN on "Selection Sunday," December 3.

On Selection Sunday, the committee will announce the rankings and the matchups of the top four teams for the 2023 Playoff Semifinals at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, California. Both games will be played on January 1, 2024.

The committee also will announce the pairings for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic (December 29, 2023), Capital One Orange Bowl (December 30, 2023), Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (December 30, 2023) and the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl (January 1, 2024).

 

This season's 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship Game will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Monday, January 8, 2024.

 

The 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship Game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship Game will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Monday, January 5, 2026.

 

 

 

 

TCU Football Ranked 17th in 2023 Preseason Associated Press Poll

The TCU football team is ranked 17th in the 2023 preseason Associated Press Poll. 

Georgia, who defeated the Horned Frogs, 65-7, in the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, is ranked first. 

Michigan, whom TCU defeated 51-45 in the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship Semifinal Game in the Fiesta Bowl, is ranked second.

Ranked 11th, the University of Texas is the highest-ranked Big 12 team. This is the Longhorns' final season in the Big 12. UT, along with the Big 12's University of Oklahoma, which is ranked 20th, joins the Southeastern Conference in 2024.

Kansas State, who defeated TCU, 31-28 (OT), in the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game, is ranked 16th.

Big 12 Conference members Texas Tech, Kansas and Baylor are among a group of other schools receiving votes.

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA football coaches poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of 63 head coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Max Duggan Named 2022-23 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year

 

Former TCU quarterback Max Duggan has been named the 2022-23 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year.

Duggan, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, is the first Horned Frog, male or female, to receive the award in TCU's 11 years in the conference. Voting was done by a media panel.

Earlier this month, Duggan was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Big 12's Bob Bowlsby Award. Named in recognition of the conference's former commissioner, the award is the Big 12's most prestigious individual accolade. 
 
In leading TCU during the 2002 football season to the College Football Playoff (CFP), a semifinal win over Michigan and a trip to the 2023 CFP National Championship Game, Duggan won the Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award while being the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 selection. He tied for the national lead with 17 touchdown passes of at least 20 yards and led the Big 12 in touchdown passes (32), passing efficiency (159.2), passing yards (3,698), yards per attempt (8.9) and yards per completion (13.9). He accounted for three or more touchdowns in nine games. His 32 touchdown passes on the season were one shy of the TCU record, while his 41 touchdowns (32 passing, 9 rushing) responsible for were also second-most at TCU.

A Council Bluffs, Iowa, native, Duggan was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 recipient and a member of the 2019-20 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. He earned his degree in marketing in December 2022 from TCU's prestigious Neeley School of Business.
