These COVID-19 precautions will be in effect for the 2020-21 college football season:
- Officials will use electronic whistles, instead of traditional whistles.
- The team area will be expanded from between the 25-yard lines to the 15-yard lines to encourage social distancing.
- The pregame coin toss will feature one captain from each team, and the referee and umpire. These four will be spaced out and conform to social distancing guidelines during the coin toss.
- A player can wear a medical mask attached to his helmet's facemask. The mask must be the same color and design for every player and can only feature the team logo.
- Officials will wear a black mask. Officials will “mask up” when the snap is imminent. They may lower their mask between plays, when in space (social distancing). An official may lower his mask and replenish oxygen but must mask up if anyone approaches him or the next snap is imminent.
- Officials will be tested for COVID-19 weekly and will follow all conference protocols.
- Within the Big 12 Conference, a school must have a minimum of 53 players available for the game to be played.
- In addition, of the 53 minimum players, the Big 12 has established minimum thresholds for offensive linemen (seven), interior defensive linemen (four) and quarterback (one). Teams falling below any of these player benchmarks, based on game-week COVID test results, could still elect to play as scheduled, if so desired. Otherwise, upon approval by the Commissioner, the game would be declared a no-contest if it cannot be moved to a later date.
