Team Notes

  • TCU won in Head Coach Sonny Dykes' debut with the Horned Frogs, after taking over for long-time TCU head coach Gary Patterson.
  • Dykes is 2-1 as a head coach versus Colorado. While head coach at the University of California, he was 1-1 against the Buffs.
  • TCU and Colorado met for the first time on the gridiron. The teams will play again on September 2, 2023, in next year's season opener in Fort Worth.
  • TCU played in the state of Colorado for the first time since September 10, 2011, when it won 35-19 at Air Force.
  • TCU has won its last eight games against Pac-12 opponents.
  • TCU opened its season on a Friday for the first time since 2011 at Baylor.
  • TCU scored for the 368th consecutive game, the second-longest streak in NCAA history. No. 1 is Florida at 423 games (1988-present). The Horned Frogs haven't been blanked since November 16, 1991, at Texas (32-0).
  • TCU season captains Steve Avila, Dylan Horton, Quentin Johnston and Dee Winters took part in the coin toss.
  • TCU wore a purple helmet, white jersey and purple pants. 

 
Individual Notes

Offense

  • Quarterback Chandler Morris made his third career start. Also making his first career TCU start was center Alan Ali, who started 39 games at SMU over the previous four seasons.
  • Morris was 13-of-20 passing for 111 yards while adding 18 yards rushing on four carries.
  • Kendre Miller rushed for a team-high 52 yards on eight attempts, including a 3-yard scoring run.
  • Emari Demercado's 43-yard touchdown run also marked a career-long carry.
  • Derius Davis had a 27-yard touchdown run, his second career rushing score, to go with his 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.
  • Max Duggan had a 33-yard gain on his first rushing attempt. He finished with 41 yards on three carries.
  • Savion Williams had a career-high three receptions for 31 yards, tying Quentin Johnston for team-best honors.
  • Redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Jackson scored his first career touchdown on a 7-yard run.
  • Taye Barber had a reception for 9 yards. His 123 career catches are the most among current Horned Frogs.
  • Trent Battle made his collegiate debut and had two carries for 4 yards.
  • Jared Wiley had two receptions for 13 yards in his first game as a Horned Frog.
  • True freshman Jordan Hudson had an 8-yard catch for his first career reception.

    
Defense 

  • TCU's starting defense featured four newcomers: linebacker Johnny Hodges (Navy), cornerback Josh Newton (ULM), safety Mark Perry (Colorado) and 17-year-old true freshman nose tackle Damonic Williams. Also making his first TCU start was junior safety Abe Camara.
  • Perry had four tackles against his former team.
  • Jamoi Hodge, Dee Winters and newcomer Namdi Obiazor tied for team-high honors with five tackles each.
  • Winters totaled 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack for a loss of 12.
  • Williams had his first collegiate sack in his collegiate debut, along with combining with Hodge on a fourth down red-zone stop to thwart a Colorado scoring threat on the game's opening series.
  • Millard Bradford and Kee'yon Stewart both had two pass breakups.


Special Teams 

  • Derius Davis returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown. It tied KaVontae Turpin's TCU record of four career punt returns for touchdowns.
  • Combined with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against West Virginia last season, Davis has five career special teams scores. 
  • Jordy Sandy placed two punts inside the 20-yard line, including one at the 1. He is donating $20 to Fort Worth's Hope Center for Autism for every punt inside the 20-yard line. 
  • Griffin Kell's 33-yard field goal made him 30-of-40 in his career.
  • True freshman Luke Laminack handled kickoff duties.
