Former TCU head football coach Gary Patterson has joined the University of Texas football staff as a special assistant to Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian.

Patterson is reunited in Austin with Chris Del Conte, Texas’ athletic director, who was TCU’s athletic director from 2009-2017.

Patterson's wife, Kelsey, is a University of Texas alumnus.

Patterson was TCU’s head football coach from 2000-2021. He is the Horned Frogs’ all-time winningest head football coach. He amassed a record of 181-79 with the Frogs.

Patterson and TCU parted ways this past October 31, after the Horned Frogs started the 2021 season 3-5.

With the Horned Frogs, Patterson had a 7-3 record against Texas since 2012, when TCU joined the Big 12.

Patterson will have an analyst-type role at UT, similar to the position Jerry Kill had on Patterson’s TCU staff in 2020 and 2021. Kill was an offensive specialist. Patterson will offer his advice and guidance on the Longhorns’ defense, which is overseen by defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

During the 2022 football season, TCU will play Texas in Austin on November 12.
