TCU safety Trevon
Moehrig on Thursday, January 6, became the first Horned Frog to win college
football's Jim Thorpe Award, which annually recognizes the country's top
defensive back.
The announcement of
Moehrig winning the award was made live during ESPN's Home Depot College
Football Awards Show.
For the 2020 season,
Moehrig, who recently announced that he is forgoing his final season of
eligibility to pursue his NFL dreams (he is projected as a first-round
selection in the 2021 NFL Draft), recorded 47 tackles, 11 pass-breakups and two
interceptions in 10 games.
Moehrig was
selected First-Team All-Big 12 by the conference head coaches for the second
straight season and was named to seven All-America teams.
Moehrig took part
in nine takeaways over the last two seasons, which tied for second in the
Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Pro Football Focus
ranked Moehrig as the nation's No. 1 safety in 2019. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.,
rates Moehrig as the No. 1 safety prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft.
